CARE HOME A shelter home for cancer & kidney patients at calicut medical college Dear brothers and sisters ,Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakathuhu As you all are aware, Calicut Medical College has been an epicenter of patients from various districts from Malabar for past several decades. Many patients come there with lots of hopes especially poor strata of society. I have been working at Calicut Medical College since 2004 and is in special charge of hematology patients which include blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and non malignant diseases like hemophilia, sickle disease and many others. Around 40 to 50 patients are present in leukemia ward alone, 70 to 80 patients attend our op alone. There are about 200 OP and similar Inpatients in radio therapy ward which deals with solid cancers like lung, breast cancer and various others. Pediatric patients suffering from similar illness are yet another major group. Altogether, there may be around 1200 patients per month who are being treated and taken care well in our College. As it is well known that incidence of cancer is steadily increasing and Alhamdulillah, more and more newer treatment modalities are coming up and some of them are getting cured and for other cancer patients, we are able to give reasonably good quality of life until their death. The treatment given at RCC and what we give are almost the same, but RCC has got better cure rate than us. It is because of lesser incidence of infections seen there. What RCC does is to give chemotherapy from hospital and send patient back to many shelter homes nearby run by many organizations, where they can stay and spend time with close relatives comfortably. At Calicut Medical College, facilities even though available do not meet the requirement of huge number of patient load. At times, we have to keep two cancer patients on same bed to give chemo! It is indeed more pathetic to see old people with cancers who have to lie down on the floor in between beds for the sake of getting treatment. Rooms have AC, but at times that too don’t work. We have only three bathrooms for a ward containing around 120 patients, which at times is too unbearable to see without water! It is really disheartening to see patients who are already suffering from cancer, who has to undergo hardships even without a fan, or even water! Basic amenities which we can give! Already they are physically, mentally and financially weak. Truly, it is a great trial for our patients! Surely, on seeing such patients, we remember infinite blessings we have. If you count the Blessings of Allah, never will you be able to count them….(14 Ibrahim: وَإِن تَعُدُّواْ نِعْمَةَ اللَّهِ لاَ تُحْصُوهَا ( 34 إِنَّ الإنْسَانَ لَظَلُومٌ آَفَّارٌ Helplessness I face myself…without able to help them…and seeing the hopelessness of patients… If these patients are helped, surely Allah (swt) is going to help us in the times of distress in some way! “Be merciful to those on earth, Allah will be merciful to you” Many patients can be treated successfully and comfortable without much incidence of infections if they can be given chemo from our wards and send back to some good place to stay nearby hospital which is neat and clean! I had personally talked to many organizations to build a shelter home where these groups of leukemia patients can be treated instead of going back home. Such shelter homes are key success of RCC. Necessity of care home project 1) No need to go home and that too to different places. 2) Already they are weak due to vomiting and loss of appetite and another journey will make them much weaker. 3) Many chemotherapy protocols are such that we need to give chemo on alternate days, some in a gap of one week, some two weeks etc. depending upon various cancers. Such patients if they can stay nearby, it will be a great relief for them. 4) Less chance of infection. 5) Financial burden of journey especially to distant places can be avoided. 6) Can have close and blood relatives their side by which gives them lot of comfort. 7) Sure, mental peace and optimistic attitude will always help in the better outcome of treatment. Indeed, it is key reason for greater cure in RCC. If we can provide shelter home for cancer patients, surely we can achieve these objectives easily and have better outcome for cancer patients, Insha Allah! Surely, with Allah Alone is Cure! We can only Care! When I am ill, it is He Who cures me.( وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ ,( 26:80 Allah azzawajjal alone can help us…“O Allah! Lord of People, remove the affliction and grant cure. You are the Healer. There is no cure except from you. Grant a cure that leaves behind no sickness”. Ameen Care home provides 1) A place of relief for cancer patients 2) Shelter home for dialysis patients and renal transplantation, yet another major group of patients which is increasing day by day. 3) Counseling Centers 4) Free medicine and food 5) Help and guidance centre 6) Awareness campaign 7) Students home 8) Library facilities for students 9) Prayer Hall and conference hall What can you do? • Give your valuable share from your merciful heart. • As Allah (swt) asks us “And what is the matter with you that you spend not in the cause of Allah? And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth.” ( وَمَا ..( 57:10 لَكُمْ أَلاَّ تُنفِقُواْ فِى سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَلِلَّهِ مِيرَاثُ السَّمَوَتِ وَالاٌّرْضِ • Allah Azzawajal beautifully mentions in His Book making us realize that what we have is not ours! It’s only Allah’s! We have been given this for some time to keep guard of. When we die, surely, it will be passed on to someone else. Allah (swt) asks us again! Who is he that will lend to Allah a goodly loan: then Allah will increase in manifold to his credit, and he will have a good reward (paradise).. ( مَّن ذَا الَّذِى يُقْرِضُ اللَّهَ قَرْضاً حَسَناً ( 57:11 فَيُضَاعِفَهُ لَهُ وَلَهُ أَجْرٌ آَرِيمٌ • Prophet (SAW) said to his beloved, “Ayesha, it is not what we enjoyed ourselves that counts, but what made others enjoy”. Our eyes must get wet for others, not for ourselves. Do good things for others, even if it is trivial. Be the ‘light’ and ‘shade’ in other’s life, being a small lamp or a flower seed. One who denies religion is the one who shuns away small favours… • Allah (swt) teaches us, “Do good to others, surely Allah loves those who do good to others.” ( وَأَحْسِنُواْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ .( 2:195 • More than quantity which we give, let’s believe in quality as Allah Azzawajal is closely watcher of our heart and its intention! Let’s give whatever donations we have, part of zakat or sadaqa, big or small, purely seeking pleasure of Face of Almighty, to Please Him Alone, to see Him in akhirat! Surely, it will be a sadaqatul Jariya! Even after our death, any patients who get the comfort and peace out of this shelter home, its small reward will enlighten our grave, make it more vast, gives us peace and serenity till we are raised up! • I would like to share you with a personal experience of a rich person to whom we went describing this project. Words he spoke are imprint in my heart. He said, “Indeed, I shall give. He has realized its importance. I am not giving it to you to as a burden to leave you away; I am giving it for my sake!” He gave a cheque of Rs. 5 lakhs! Masha Allah! Pray Allah increase mercy in all our hearts and increase wealth of all to give us in charity more and more! As charity wipes away all our sins and save us from all sorts of hardships in both the worlds! Sure, it is Promise of Allah Azzawajal, which He will show us through our lives!! • Even if you can’t contribute for this noble venture, please share this with your friends, idea of care home project! • Last not but the least; please do dua for success of this project and our patients. Your sincere duas from pure and merciful heart is truly precious and will be definitely useful Insha Allah! So please remember in all your duas! • Please do visit these patients to increase imaan and care home building in the future Insha Allah once when it starts functioning. Surely, our imaan will increase on seeing patients! Let’s join hands together to make this project a great success!!! Surely, little drops of water make a huge ocean. Let’s do whatever little we can do.If we can save a life of a person, it is as though we save whole of human kind. وَمَنْ أَحْيَهَا فَكَأَنَّمَا أَحْيَا النَّاسَ جَمِيعاً 5:32 Pray Allah Accept Good Hearts of all behind it! Pray Allah make our deeds pure and our intentions much purer for the sake of Pleasure of Allah (swt). Pray Allah forgive all our sins, forgive for Pride & any Show off (Shirk Al Asgar), which had come in our thoughts, words or deeds, knowingly or unknowingly. Pray Allah save us from trials which we can’t bear. Pray Allah unite all of us with our family in His Jannat ul Firdaus, to see Glory of Almighty and to abide there in forever with all whom we Love intensely. Jazakallahu khair.
