CARE HOME

CARE HOME
A shelter home for cancer & kidney patients at calicut medical college
Dear brothers and sisters ,Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakathuhu
As you all are aware, Calicut Medical College has been an epicenter of patients from various districts
from Malabar for past several decades. Many patients come there with lots of hopes especially poor
strata of society.
I have been working at Calicut Medical College since 2004 and is in special charge of hematology
patients which include blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and non malignant
diseases like hemophilia, sickle disease and many others. Around 40 to 50 patients are present in
leukemia ward alone, 70 to 80 patients attend our op alone. There are about 200 OP and similar
Inpatients in radio therapy ward which deals with solid cancers like lung, breast cancer and various
others. Pediatric patients suffering from similar illness are yet another major group. Altogether,
there may be around 1200 patients per month who are being treated and taken care well in our
College.
As it is well known that incidence of cancer is steadily increasing and Alhamdulillah, more and more
newer treatment modalities are coming up and some of them are getting cured and for other cancer
patients, we are able to give reasonably good quality of life until their death. The treatment given at
RCC and what we give are almost the same, but RCC has got better cure rate than us. It is because of
lesser incidence of infections seen there. What RCC does is to give chemotherapy from hospital and
send patient back to many shelter homes nearby run by many organizations, where they can stay
and spend time with close relatives comfortably.
At Calicut Medical College, facilities even though available do not meet the requirement of huge
number of patient load. At times, we have to keep two cancer patients on same bed to give chemo! It
is indeed more pathetic to see old people with cancers who have to lie down on the floor in between
beds for the sake of getting treatment. Rooms have AC, but at times that too don’t work. We have
only three bathrooms for a ward containing around 120 patients, which at times is too unbearable
to see without water! It is really disheartening to see patients who are already suffering from
cancer, who has to undergo hardships even without a fan, or even water! Basic amenities which we
can give! Already they are physically, mentally and financially weak. Truly, it is a great trial for our
patients!
Surely, on seeing such patients, we remember infinite blessings we have. If you count the Blessings of
Allah, never will you be able to count them….(14 Ibrahim: وَإِن تَعُدُّواْ نِعْمَةَ اللَّهِ لاَ تُحْصُوهَا ( 34
إِنَّ الإنْسَانَ لَظَلُومٌ آَفَّارٌ
Helplessness I face myself…without able to help them…and seeing the hopelessness of patients… If
these patients are helped, surely Allah (swt) is going to help us in the times of distress in some way!
“Be merciful to those on earth, Allah will be merciful to you”
Many patients can be treated successfully and comfortable without much incidence of infections if
they can be given chemo from our wards and send back to some good place to stay nearby hospital
which is neat and clean! I had personally talked to many organizations to build a shelter home
where these groups of leukemia patients can be treated instead of going back home. Such shelter
homes are key success of RCC.
Necessity of care home project
1) No need to go home and that too to different places.
2) Already they are weak due to vomiting and loss of appetite and another journey will make
them much weaker.
3) Many chemotherapy protocols are such that we need to give chemo on alternate days, some
in a gap of one week, some two weeks etc. depending upon various cancers. Such patients if
they can stay nearby, it will be a great relief for them.
4) Less chance of infection.
5) Financial burden of journey especially to distant places can be avoided.
6) Can have close and blood relatives their side by which gives them lot of comfort.
7) Sure, mental peace and optimistic attitude will always help in the better outcome of
treatment. Indeed, it is key reason for greater cure in RCC.
If we can provide shelter home for cancer patients, surely we can achieve these objectives easily
and have better outcome for cancer patients, Insha Allah! Surely, with Allah Alone is Cure! We
can only Care! When I am ill, it is He Who cures me.( وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ ,( 26:80 Allah
azzawajjal alone can help us…“O Allah! Lord of People, remove the affliction and grant cure.
You are the Healer. There is no cure except from you. Grant a cure that leaves behind no
sickness”. Ameen
Care home provides
1) A place of relief for cancer patients
2) Shelter home for dialysis patients and renal transplantation, yet another major group of
patients which is increasing day by day.
3) Counseling Centers
4) Free medicine and food
5) Help and guidance centre
6) Awareness campaign
7) Students home
8) Library facilities for students
9) Prayer Hall and conference hall
What can you do?
• Give your valuable share from your merciful heart.
• As Allah (swt) asks us “And what is the matter with you that you spend not in the cause of
Allah? And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth.” ( وَمَا ..( 57:10
لَكُمْ أَلاَّ تُنفِقُواْ فِى سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَلِلَّهِ مِيرَاثُ السَّمَوَتِ وَالاٌّرْضِ
• Allah Azzawajal beautifully mentions in His Book making us realize that what we have is not
ours! It’s only Allah’s! We have been given this for some time to keep guard of. When we die,
surely, it will be passed on to someone else. Allah (swt) asks us again! Who is he that will
lend to Allah a goodly loan: then Allah will increase in manifold to his credit, and he will
have a good reward (paradise).. ( مَّن ذَا الَّذِى يُقْرِضُ اللَّهَ قَرْضاً حَسَناً ( 57:11
فَيُضَاعِفَهُ لَهُ وَلَهُ أَجْرٌ آَرِيمٌ
• Prophet (SAW) said to his beloved, “Ayesha, it is not what we enjoyed ourselves that
counts, but what made others enjoy”. Our eyes must get wet for others, not for ourselves.
Do good things for others, even if it is trivial. Be the ‘light’ and ‘shade’ in other’s life,
being a small lamp or a flower seed. One who denies religion is the one who shuns away
small favours…
• Allah (swt) teaches us, “Do good to others, surely Allah loves those who do good
to others.” ( وَأَحْسِنُواْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ .( 2:195
• More than quantity which we give, let’s believe in quality as Allah Azzawajal is closely
watcher of our heart and its intention! Let’s give whatever donations we have, part of zakat
or sadaqa, big or small, purely seeking pleasure of Face of Almighty, to Please Him Alone, to
see Him in akhirat! Surely, it will be a sadaqatul Jariya! Even after our death, any patients
who get the comfort and peace out of this shelter home, its small reward will enlighten our
grave, make it more vast, gives us peace and serenity till we are raised up!
• I would like to share you with a personal experience of a rich person to whom we went
describing this project. Words he spoke are imprint in my heart. He said, “Indeed, I shall give.
He has realized its importance. I am not giving it to you to as a burden to leave you away; I
am giving it for my sake!” He gave a cheque of Rs. 5 lakhs! Masha Allah! Pray Allah increase
mercy in all our hearts and increase wealth of all to give us in charity more and more! As
charity wipes away all our sins and save us from all sorts of hardships in both the worlds!
Sure, it is Promise of Allah Azzawajal, which He will show us through our lives!!
• Even if you can’t contribute for this noble venture, please share this with your friends, idea of
care home project!
• Last not but the least; please do dua for success of this project and our patients. Your sincere
duas from pure and merciful heart is truly precious and will be definitely useful Insha Allah!
So please remember in all your duas!
• Please do visit these patients to increase imaan and care home building in the future Insha
Allah once when it starts functioning. Surely, our imaan will increase on seeing patients!
Let’s join hands together to make this project a great success!!! Surely, little drops of water
make a huge ocean. Let’s do whatever little we can do.If we can save a life of a person, it is as
though we save whole of human kind. وَمَنْ أَحْيَهَا فَكَأَنَّمَا أَحْيَا النَّاسَ جَمِيعاً 5:32
Pray Allah Accept Good Hearts of all behind it!
Pray Allah make our deeds pure and our intentions much purer for the sake of Pleasure of
Allah (swt).
Pray Allah forgive all our sins, forgive for Pride & any Show off (Shirk Al Asgar), which had
come in our thoughts, words or deeds, knowingly or unknowingly.
Pray Allah save us from trials which we can’t bear.
Pray Allah unite all of us with our family in His Jannat ul Firdaus, to see Glory of Almighty and
to abide there in forever with all whom we Love intensely. Ameen

SHOCKING: Two more Indians commit suicide in Ajman, Dubai

Shop owner, who tried to kill himself, saved by friend’s intervention

Two more Indians have ended their lives in Dubai and Ajman.

21-year-old Nikhil Soman Nair from Kerala state’s Pathanamthitta district, was found dead seven days after he landed in UAE to work for a printing press owned by another Keralite.

According to social worker Ashraf, the youth was brought to UAE to work in a company managed by one of his neighbours back home. He is the only son of his father who married thrice.

“This is the latest suicide to be reported from the Indian community. Nikhil was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his room in Ajman. He wanted to have lunch one hour before the company’s lunch break. He was behaving strangely, came out of the company’s premises and took the house’s key from a colleague. He said he will go to his room to rest, but when the new employee did not return to work, his accommodation nearby was searched where his body was found,” said Ashraf.

Social workers said the newly recruited man could have been suffering from home sickness. “We called Ajman Police to remove the body from the accommodation. His body will be sent home on Monday night on an Emirates flight.”

Another Indian worker has reportedly found dead, suspected to be a suicide, as he could not go home for his wedding. “He lived in Satwa. He was to get married, but he could not go home for the wedding.  He is suspected to have committed suicide. The body is yet to be sent home,” said a social worker familiar with the case.

The number of Indians committing suicide in the UAE has been going up. Many individuals and families suffering from mental depression and financial distress have ended their lives.

At an interactive session on suicides jointly organised by the social organisation Sevanam and the Indian Media Forum last Friday, three desperate Indians, who had unsuccessfully attempted suicide, came forward seeking help.

A tailor from Ajman, hailing from Kanjangadu, Kerala, said he attempted suicide two times because he could not pay back the capital and the huge interest charged by Ajman-based money lenders. Many distressed Indians, who participated in the Sevanam-Indian Media Forum session on suicides, have sought legal, moral and material support for coming out of the mess. All the participants were unanimous that the Indian embassy and consulate should take more steps to address the problem and that the Indian government should use part of the welfare fund for helping financially and emotionally distressed Indian expatriates in the UAE.

“I used to work as a tailor and I decided to expand my business by purchasing a tailoring shop which was for sale. I spend Dh14,000 to purchase the shop from the sponsor, but after I paid the money and started business, another person came forward and claimed the ownership of the same shop. I was in shocked but could not do anything. When he pestered and insulted me in front of my customers, I decided to take a loan of Dh14,000 from a money lender in Ajman. They charged Dh1,400 per month as interest alone. I used to pay Dh1,400 per month as interest alone from a total income of Dh2000 to Dh2500. Even after paying Dh1,400 every month for two years, the principal amount was outstanding,” the indebted tailor said.

“I borrowed indiscriminately from friends, relatives and others back home to run the business and to treat my mother who suffered a major accident. I sold my property back home to settle some of the dues, but since I am frequently humiliated and insulted by lenders including my friends, I decided to end my life. However, I was released from the death trap by my roommate who lent me some money,” he said.

“I was about to sleep but felt something was wrong. My roommate was quietly moving the table near to the ceiling fan and was preparing to hang himself using a curtain cloth. When I suddenly switched on the light, I found him trying to hang from the ceiling fan. I stopped immediately him and his life was saved. I told him there is a way out of his problems,” said his roommate, who works in Dubai Media City.

Two other people with similar stories approached Indian social workers seeking help. Many of the participants wanted expert advice on how to minimise the number of credit cards and personal loans, the main reasons for financial stress, said Manoharan Vathisseril, co-ordinator of the seminar.

PG Rajendar, president of Sevanam, Dubai, made each of the 12,000-odd Sevanam members take a pledge that none of them would ever commit suicide or even think of taking their own life. Sevanam officials said the campaign against suicides and financial distress would continue.

Dr George Kaliadan, a psychologist in Dubai, promised to give free consultation to people suffering from suicidal tendencies once in three weeks. Advocate Hashik Thykandiyil agreed to offer free legal consultation to such financially distressed people. Social workers also urged the Indian embassy, consulate and socio-political organisations to help needy Indian citizens.

Ticket to ride for female literacy across India

Schoolgirls ride bicycles, received under a Bihar state government programme
  • Schoolgirls ride bicycles, received under a Bihar state government programme to keep them in school, on the outskirts of Patna.

Rampur Singhara: The daily trip to high school was expensive, long and eventually, too much for Indian teenager Nahid Farzana, who decided she was going to drop out. Then, the state government gave her a bicycle.

Two years later, she is about to graduate from high school and wants to be a teacher.

The eastern state of Bihar has been so successful at keeping teenage girls in school, the bike giveaways have spread to neighbouring states. Now the Indian government wants to expand it across the country in hopes it might help improve female literacy.

Before starting the programme in 2007, officials in Bihar, one of India's poorest and least developed states, despaired over how to educate the state's females, whose literacy rate of 53 per cent is more than 20 points below that of its males.

Dropout rate

"We found that the high school dropout rate soared when girls reached the ninth grade. This was primarily because there are fewer high schools and girls had to travel longer distances to get to school," said Anjani Kumar Singh, Bihar's principal secretary overseeing education.

Poor families could not spare the money for transport, or were reluctant to let girls travel so far away, fearing for their safety.

The programme was an instant success, with the number of girls registered in the ninth grade in Bihar's state schools more than tripling in four years, from 175,000 to 600,000.

"The results are remarkable. The school dropout rate for girls has plunged," says Singh.

In her crisply starched blue tunic uniform and white scarf, Farzana appears a carefree teenager, proud to have made it into the tenth grade. But she almost did not make it.

Her daily bus fare of 15 rupees (Dh0.99) to the new high school 6 kilometers from their home in Rampur Singhara village was an additional burden her father, a car mechanic, could not afford.

"I wouldn't have been able to keep Farzana in school for long," said Mohammad Shiraz Ahmad, her father.

A teacher told them about the free bicycles, and Farzana applied for the 2,500 rupee (Dh165) grant to buy the bike.

"The bicycle has changed everything," Ahmad said.

In remote villages, gaggles of school girls can be seen jauntily cycling to school

One Indian commits suicide every third day

Alarming trend claimed 110 lives last year

  • By Rayeesa Absal, Staff Reporter
  • Published: 00:00 May 17, 2011
  • Dubai: An Indian expatriate commits suicide almost every third day of the year, fresh official figures show.

More than 110 Indians committed suicide last year in Dubai and the northern emirates and another 27 killed themselves this year, the Indian consulate disclosed Monday.

"The number of Indians who committed suicide last year stands at 110. This year there have been 27 such deaths so far," Sanjay Verma, Consul General, said.

In 2008, out of 1,420 deaths registered at the consulate, 147 were suicides. In 2009, out of 1,285 deaths 113 were suicides. In 2010, out of 1,114 deaths 110 were suicides and in 2011 until April 30, 335 deaths were recorded of which 27 were suicides.

Verma said the reasons behind suicides fall into two categories — financial stress and personal issues such as low self-esteem, depression, interpersonal issues etc.

"The high suicide rate is a recent trend and is an alarming one," an official who asked not to be named told Gulf News.

A government doctor, who declined to be named, said that a high proportion of suicide cases here involve Indians, ‘probably the highest among all nationalities'.

Besides the high number of Indian expatriates, the reason for higher number of suicides could be the lack of someone to confide in. "Many of the victims are people who are living away from their family and relatives, which leads to loneliness and stress."

.The Indian diplomatic missions in the UAE established the Indian Workers Resource Centre (IWRC) in Dubai last November and launched a 24-hour hotline to extend help to expatriates in need.

"We urge expatriates to reach out to us through the hotline 800 INDIA (800 46342)," an IWRC official said.
